Bear Necessities Ranger Program at Skyland Lodge

Dark Hollwo Falls on Skyline Drive VA
Dark Hollow Falls
When Nadia and I finished hiking the Dark Hollow Falls Trail, we headed back to the Skyland Resort for a Ranger Program called Bear Necessities.  It was a talk about the black bear in the Shenandoah National Park.  They had many exhibits to show, including a small igloo cooler that was chewed up by a bear!  They are very powerful creatures.  I am sorry I did not take a picture of it :( After the talk, Nadia was able to get her book signed by the Ranger.  She was one step closer to getting her Junior Ranger Badge. Before we left, we were talking to a couple about the some of the bears we have seen on our trip so far.  They had not seen any yet.  We said our goodbyes and as I drove away, there was a bear walking in the woods.  I hurried up and drove back into the parking lot to let the couple know where to look.  We then drove out again and took some pictures, by then the bear had crossed the street.  This picture was taken with the zoom on and we were in the car ready to drive off.

Here is some more information that I have previously written on Black Bears and Safety.
When we got back to our room, we got ready for dinner and walked over to the dining room.  Later that night, we walked over to the Ranger campfire program.  Nadia got her last signature needed to become a Junior Ranger.  A kind family had brought fixings for smores and invited us to have some.  It was a really nice and fun time.
