Ranger-Led Hayride through Cades Cove in the Evening and the last Day at the Cabin in Townsend, TN

For our last day at the Cabin in the Smoky Mountains, I did some laundry.  Yes you read that right, laundry.  The facilities at the Townsend KOA were very clean and nice.  It was one narrow room with the washers on one side and the dryers on the other. While the laundry was going, Nadia and I went over to the playground and then over to the pool.  When the laundry was finally done we went back to the cabin.  I made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch and then we sat by the calm part of the river for a little while and put our feet in.

After lunch we headed over to Cades Cove, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, to do the 11-mile loop auto tour.  My next post will go into more detail on what there was to see.  When we were done, I was going to try to go horseback riding in Cades Cove, but the stables had closed for the day.  I bought our tickets to do the Ranger led evening hayride.  We had some time, so I bought us each an ice cream over at the Cades Cove Camp Store.   A couple of turkeys came by while we were waiting for the ride to start.  That was a neat site to see.

The hayride was ready to begin.  It is a big wagon pulled by a truck.  You travel a long the 11-Mile loop road, and the ranger discusses the history and nature of the area.  There were some bear sightings a long the way.  The traffic would just stop, so by the time we got to the area, the bear had already moved on.  The only wildlife we saw on this trip was deer and turkeys.  It was a very nice evening and the breeze was wonderful.  I still enjoyed the tour.

The last we visited we did the morning ranger led hayride.  I would suggest the morning one if you want to see more wildlife. You can read about it here and see our video of the Momma Bear and her little cubs.  It was exciting.

After the ride was over, we headed back to the cabin to enjoy our last campfire on this visit.  We again enjoyed the lightning bugs and Nadia worked on her cross-stitch.
