Snorkeling and More at John Pennekamp in Key Largo, Florida

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park Key Largo, Florida
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
On our way home from Key West, we stopped off at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.  Our plan was to go on a snorkel boat trip, but the weather was not cooperating and I was not feeling very well.  We decided to have a little cook out instead for lunch and admire the view while we ate.

State Parks in Key Largo Florida

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park was one of the first undersea parks in the United States.  It would be very easy to spend the whole day here.  They offer camping (tent & RV).  You can snorkel off the beach in three different swimming areas.  One area is called Cannon Beach and when the water is clear, you are able to see actual remnants of an early Spanish Shipwreck (100 Feet off shore).  I have snorkeled their in the past, but unfortunately the water was not clear when I went :(

****Tip: Wear water shoes when walking on the beach.  It is very rocky and hurts your feet.

Beaches in Key Largo Florida

Besides snorkeling off the beach; You can rent Paddle boards, Canoes or Kayaks to explore the park.

If you want to go out to the reef and see something really beautiful, book a snorkeling boat tour.  This was where I had my first snorkeling experience when I was in Marine Biology in High School.  I was hooked.  The coral reef was the most beautifulest thing I had seen.  Along with the many variety of fish that you will see.

Please Note: There are also scuba tours available.  I have not tried that though.

Picnic in Key Largo, Florida

If snorkeling is not your thing, but you still would like to see the coral reef, you are in luck.  John Pennekamp also has Glass Bottom Boat Tours available.  I have tried this out a couple of times.  It is really nice.

*******Tip: If you are visiting the South Florida Area, a good day trip is booking an early morning Glass Bottom Boat Tour and then drive down to Islamorada for a relaxing lunch on the water at one of the restaurants.

Grilling hotdogs in Key Largo, Florida

Can you believe during our cookout, a seagull swooped down and attacked our hot dogs while they were cooking on the grill?  The culprit is shown below.

Seagull in the keys

As you can see from the pictures, that a storm was rolling in.  We left shortly after we ate and had to drive home the rest of the way in the rain, but it was worth it.  We had three days of sun before that in Key West, cannot complain.

Here is a link to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, so you can check out all that they offer and find out their prices and time.

Have a great day!
